Corners Gallery is thrilled to present CONTEMPORARY MAPPING: WE’RE STILL HERE, a group exhibition of 28 exceptional artists working with an interpretation of maps: Ben Altman, Amos Snyder Bergen, Kyle Butler, Sarah Butler, Lori Farist, Nancy Farese, Emily Gibbons, Laura Glenn, Jeanne Heifetz, Nina Hien, Jesse Hill, Ileen Kaplan, Sarah Kinard, InShik Lee, Serge Marchetta, Joetta Maue, Julie Nathanielsz, John Olson, Barbara Page, Masha Ryskin, Laurie Snyder, Carol Spence, Julie Waltz-Stalker, Werner Sun, John Vorstadt, Ellen Weider, Melissa Zarem and Stefan Zoller.

Inspired by the book, The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography by Katherine Harmon, Corners Gallery hosted an invitational exhibit titled, “You Are Here: Contemporary Mapping” in 2016. Fast forward to 2022, and the world is a now a different place. This exhibit entertains and invites both the literal approach to artist maps as well as the loosely based metaphorical concept of our place in the world.

Join us for the reception on Saturday, Jan. 14, from 4-6 pm.

CONTEMPORARY MAPPING: WE’RE STILL HERE is on view Jan 14 - Feb 24, 2023. View images from the exhibition here.

We are a group of artist friends who began to meet monthly in 2020, at the start of the pandemic, to discuss works- in-progress. What began as a means of reducing the isolation we all experienced during the pandemic, blossomed into a valuable and meaningful exchange of ideas. We took note of struggles, offered up opinions (often conflicting), and encouraged each other in the challenges of using new media or developing new thematic concerns. Our monthly sessions became a lifeline for all of us, moving each person towards a more vibrant studio practice. Many visual artists work in isolation in their studios between exhibits, so finding a group of committed artists to come together in a common purpose, gives a rhythm to this solitary pursuit and keeps us pushing forward with an influx of new ideas. While the four of us have very distinct voices, after two years of meeting together, we find an interesting resonance developing between our works.
